Lesson administration
Management systems of contents and the learning process
Learning Content management systems (LCMS)
Application of Internet technologies in the education process was initially based on general-purpose services (e-mail, WWW, teleconferencing, etc.).
Gradually, special services have been developed, which integrated certain functions of electronic training (e.g. virtual class). The evolution of these ideas has led to the concept of virtual learning environment (VLE). The VLE concept is achieved by learning content management systems - LCMS and learning management systems - LMS). We will differentiate the two concepts.
Both systems, LMS and LCMS, conduct the learning content and follow learning outcomes. Both systems can manage and track the contents to the learning objects. Unlike LMS, LCMS may manage content level below the level of granular learning objects. This allows to relatively simple redirection and reconstruction the learning contents.
If SML is designed for different target groups of learners, then LCMS is designed for content developers and learners who need a personalized content.
An LCMS contains the following key components:
- Repository of learning objects. This repository is a database that stores contents as learning objects. Learning objects are available either as separate components or as components of learning modules, which in their turn can be part of a big course. The final product can be accessed via the Internet, CD-ROM or on paper. Integrity of the contents is assured regardless of delivery mode.
- Applications for authoring (authoring - means creating documents to be used in Internet). These applications are used to create multiple-use learning objects, which will subsequently be available in the repository. Developing automation applications enable learning objects by using templates and patterns created under the principles of design. Using templates, the course author can use objects from the repository, create new learning objects can combine new and old objects.
- Interface presentation of the content. If course content should be compared with the score of a musical piece, then the interface presentation can be compared with the instrument that interprets that music.
- Means of administration are used to carry out certain administrative functions: learners’ records, monitoring results, generate reports on learning and so on.
