Self-directed learning

The main features of self-directed learning

Self-directed learning is the process in which the learner:

  • Holds the initiative in learning;
  • Sets his/her own learning needs (without anybody’s assistance);
  • Formulates his/her own goals and objectives;
  • Identifies the resources and materials necessary for learning;
  • Chooses and applies adequate learning strategies;
  • Evaluates his/her own results;

Self-directed learning is strictly learner oriented; the learner does it at his/her own initiative; the time dedicated to learning is flexible and the place is varied; autonomy in setting the goals of learning is very important; the thematic contents are freely chosen at learner’s decision; the results are checked through self-control. As a result responsibility becomes the main element of self-directed learning.

The conceptual platform for self-directed learning is offered by the systematic, constructive theory of learning (see module 1)

Self-directed learning is based on the fact that the individual takes the initiative and the responsibility for what occurs. Individuals select, manage, and assess their own learning activities; they get knowledge and performs new operations.
