Student centred learning

The essence of student directed learning

Student centred learning is one of the most important tendencies which guide the didactic activity in the academic environment according to the Bologna Process.

Student centred learning is an extensive approach, which implies the substitution of lectures with active learning, integration of some curriculum based on a certain rhythm and on situations of group cooperation, that offers the responsibility for his/her own progress in education to the learner.

The professor can hold the role of: instructor, guide, mentor, consultant, peer, coordinator, etc.

Student centered learning:

  • Describes the ways of thinking about learning and teaching;
  • Represents an extensive teaching approach;
  • Is concentrated on the satisfaction of the students’ needs.

From the perspective of student centered learning, teaching and learning are two inter-conditioned processes, which infer each other. Teaching is not limited to a sheer transmission of knowledge. It combines teaching with formation, and learning with evaluation according to the set goals.
